Byers Celebrates 25 Years of Business

Byers Engineering Company is celebrating its 25th year of providing
quality products and services. Founded in 1971, Byers is a leading
provider of engineering and AM/FM/GIS services to utility and telecommunications
companies. More than a decade ago, they pioneered the development
of PC-based software for automated engineering and mapping systems.
With 1100 employees, Byers offers engineering services, underground
utility locating, long-haul design, AM/FM data conversion, and software
for telcos and utilities.
A founding member of AM/FM International, Byers is the only AM/FM/GIS
software developer to use its own software for in-house conversion
and engineering operations. Since reengineering the conversion process
three years ago, Byers has reduced its clients' costs by 70 percent
while maintaining a 99 percent delivered accuracy rate.
Byers' software user-base includes more than 50 customers worldwide.
Companies including Sprint, Union Gas (Canada), and Madison Gas
& Electric use Byers software to distribute AM/FM data to nontechnical
users outside of the engineering and mapping departments, such as
customer service and field crews.
"We help companies respond to competition with 'user tools' that
increase productivity and with products that provide easy access
to mapping and facility information," says Stewart Asbury, executive
director of Byers AM/FM/GIS group.
Byers products are object oriented and support open standards.
"To know how to build business objects into software, you first
have to know the business. Our engineering and records expertise
gives us an advantage in developing software with higher end-user
productivity. And it makes successful implementations more likely,"
says Tom Strickland, futurist and information technologist at Byers.
Byers' products include Byers Engineering Work Order System (EWO),
Byers Map Viewer, Byers Data Bridge, Byers Mobile Work Manager,
Byers One-Step Conversion Technology (TRCS/2), and Byers Map Modeler
software*.
